China Ranks No. 1 in Oranges Sown Area, Output

China leapt to the No. 1 in the world in the sown area and output of oranges, according to the eleventh International Citrus Congress that opened in Wuhan, capital city of China's central southern Hubei Province, on October 26. China owns advantaged natural conditions for the sowing of oranges and in particular, South China, including Hubei, Hunan, Fujian, Guangdong, Sichuan, and Jiangxi Provinces, has sown oranges in large scale.

Sown area of oranges in the nation reached 1.91 million hectares in 2007 and the output was 20.59 million tons, the largest amount in the world. Presently, per capita oranges consumption is 10.5 kilograms in the nation, surging 35 times over 0.3 kilograms in 1978. The congress, sponsored by the International Society of Citriculture, is undertaken by the Chinese citriculture association and Huazhong Agricultural University. Established in 1969, the International Society of Citriculture has more than 700 members presently, including over 20 Chinese members.
